Cotton bags made from 100% natural materials are fully biodegradable in the natural environment. However, the PVC-based dyes used for printing are non-recyclable; incineration releases dioxins, and recycling processes result in cotton waste. Furthermore, cotton cultivation is water-intensive, and the bags cannot be directly composted.
An organic cotton bag must be used 20,000 times to offset its production impact. A standard cotton bag requires at least 131 reuses to result in less environmental harm than a single-use plastic bag. Studies indicate that using a cotton bag 50–150 times [2–3] or 327 times results in a lower environmental impact than using plastic bags. In terms of carbon emissions and waste generation, plastic bags perform better than cotton bags. Actual usage rates may be as low as approximately 10%.
