Cotton bags have a long lifespan-typically capable of being used over 200 times-while thicker cotton canvas bags can withstand even more uses. From an environmental perspective, studies indicate that a cotton bag must be reused 50 to 150 times (or at least 131 times, and up to 327 times) for its environmental impact to fall below that of an equivalent number of disposable plastic bags, thereby minimizing environmental pollution.

Their advantages include the fact that natural-colored cotton bags are widely regarded as eco-friendly shopping bags. However, they have drawbacks: they are prone to shrinking, wrinkling, and mildew (though they are resistant to moth damage), and they lack structural stiffness; prolonged exposure to sunlight or frequent washing can cause fading and a reduction in fabric strength. Additionally, if a cotton bag features a printed design, the use of PVC-based inks may create recycling challenges and pose risks of environmental pollution.
